Frequently Asked Questions

Kansas Medication Aide certificates expire two years from their issue date, and all Kansas CMAs must take a 10-hour Medication Aide update course to renew.

Once renewed, the new certificate will be valid for two years from the date it is issued.

Anytime in the two-year period following the issue date of your CMA certification, but it is best to start looking for a course 6 months prior to the expiration date.

Kansas Medication Aides have one year from the expiration date to renew their certificate. Kansas CMAs must
complete a 10-hour update course prior to the year date. For example, if your certificate expired
July 4, 2023, you must complete the update course prior to July 4, 2024.

If your certificate has been expired for more than one year, you are required to retake a 75-clock hour Kansas medication aide course.

The updated 2 year active period will reflect as soon as the information is entered by KDADS staff. If
the initial CMA certification period has not expired, the status will display as “renewal” until the
current CMA period has expired. The following day the status will change from “renewal” to
“active”.

Once a Medication Aide certificate is expired, you cannot pass medications until your certification is updated and active in the KDADS registry.
